“First Light” New HDTV Documentary on Mauna Kea

July 12th, 2005 · No Comments

Janson Media today announced the release to worldwide television markets of the new HDTV special, FIRST LIGHT: MAUNA KEA. This one-hour documentary focuses on the highest peak in the Pacific Ocean, Mauna Kea. The most sacred site in Hawaii, the premiere location for ground-based astronomy, and home to a rare natural environment, Mauna Kea stands peerless. The term “first light” is used by astronomers to describe the first images captured by a new telescope. It is the telling moment of its potential. In Hawaiian culture, dawn — the first light of day –is significant as well — the day’s fate is still being determined. It is fitting that the first light of each day falls on the summit of Mauna Kea. Mauna Kea is a place where culture, science and the environment are striving to coexist. FIRST LIGHT, the documentary, illuminates the competing forces that vie for access to this magnificent mountain. For the mountain, this is its telling moment. The light shed by these forces will determine the future of Mauna Kea.

FIRST LIGHT was produced by Ed McNulty, and written & directed by Roland Yamamoto, for Hawaii Public Television. Janson Media’s HDTV Catalog now includes over 250 hours of programming. FIRST LIGHT is available exclusively worldwide to both standard definition and hi-definition television markets.
