Dr. Albert Schweitzer marched to his own beat, sacrificing a comfortable European life in return for serving the lepers of equatorial Africa. In this uniquely crafted one-hour docudrama shot on location in Gabon Africa and Europe, his wife Helen Bresslau, the nurse who accompanied him on this mission, renders a vivid and inspiring portrait of his work.

By the age of 30 Schweitzer was a celebrated author who had also performed Bach concerts on the great cathedral organs of Europe. He seemed en route to a distinguished career as a professor or pastor, yet something compelled the young Schweitzer to walk away from everything he had known. Within a few years he would train as a doctor, sail to Gabon in equatorial Africa and dedicate the rest of his life to its sick villagers and lepers.

In a world trying to recover from the devastation of two world wars and stockpiling weapons for another, Schweitzer"s unselfish dedication to the suffering became a universal demonstration that works of love are works of peace.
