'Gateway Arch' Celebrates 45 Years
Today Janson Media honors the 45th anniversary of the competition of St. Louis' most identifiable landmark, the Gateway Arch. A vision chosen in a national architectural competition in 1947 from among 147 entries, the 'Gateway to the West' was designed by Finnish architect Eero Saarinen and structural engineer Hannskarl Bandel and completed on October 28, 1965. Standing at 630 feet (192 m) wide at its base and 630 feet (192 m) tall, the Gateway Arch is considered the tallest monument in the United States. Today, some 4 million people visit the park each year to wander its nearly 100 acres, soak up some history and take in the breathtaking views from Saarinen's gleaming arch. The comprehensive back story of this symbol of optimism is captured in the Janson Media DVD The Gateway Arch: A Reflection of America(1 x 58') available now worldwide.
The Gateway Arch: A Reflection of America chronicles for the first time the complete story of this great American symbol... from Thomas Jefferson, Lewis & Clark, and St. Louis" role in westward expansion; to the eventual construction of the largest stainless steel structure in history. The film is narrated by Academy Award-winner and St. Louis native Kevin Kline and produced by Civil Pictures, producers of the international award-winning documentary The World"s Greatest Fair.
