Philadelphia's Franklin Institute Remains A Tribute to Discovery

On this day June 10th in 1752, Founding Father Ben Franklin (perhaps history's most innovative American) devised an experiment to test if electricity could be harnessed from lightning. Fearful of ridicule, Franklin secretly flew a kite during a thunderstorm that collected a charge in a Leyden jar when it was struck by lightning, enabling him to prove his claim. Franklin became interested in electricity in the mid-1740s, a time when much was still unknown on the topic, and spent almost a decade conducting electrical experiments. As a result of his findings he went on to coin a number of terms used today, including battery, conductor and electrician. His work is celebrated in the very city where he spent much of his time experimenting at TheFranklin Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Franklin Institute is a wonderful destination to incorporate into a family summer vacation, however those unable to make the trip can enjoy the next best thing with the award winning & highly entertaining Kids Guides: Museums DVD.
