The 1964 New York World's Fair Celebrates its 45th Anniversary

This week marks the 45th anniversary of one of biggest events in New York's history, the 1964 New York World's Fair. Since opening in Flushing Meadows Park in Queens, New York on April 21, 1964, the preservation of the fair's history and symbolism remains important. Today the 1964 New York World's Fair is remembered as a cultural highlight of mid-20th century America. It represents an era best known as 'The Space Age' when mankind took its first steps toward space exploration and it seemed that technology would provide the answers to all of the world's problems. Part futuristic exhibition, part glittery strip mall, the 1964 New York World's Fair was planned amid the optimism of the late 1950s, but the Fair's two-year run often mirrored the chaos of the 1960s. The fair was a brawling, costly and altogether chaotic event, but few of the 52 million people who attended noticed. To this day, attendees recount fond memories of out of this world exhibits (some prophetic, some far fetched) and delicious, fluffy Belgian waffles for just $1. The wonder of the experience can be relived through the DVD The 1964 World's Fair (1 x 60'), distributed exclusively through Janson Media. In the DVD, acclaimed public television producer Rich Hanley draws on the delightful memories of fairgoers who found a hope for the future and an understanding of other cultures.
