A Story of Drug Addiction in the Bronx, a Story of Recovery and Redemption
Janson Media today announced the release of The Fix to worldwide television, VOD, and digital markets. The feature-length documentary film is a tale of recovery and redemption that paints a portrait of life after heroin addiction in the Bronx. Junior, a young father trying to turn his life around after years of heroin addiction, joins forces with a group of fellow hepatitis-C-infected former junkies in the Bronx to fight the disease in their community. Knitting personal narratives together with a profile of innovative programs at a methadone clinic, the film explores the concept of storytelling as an instrument of change and gives a powerful voice to marginalized members of society. Ultimately a very personal story of redemption and hope, The Fix puts a human face on addiction and disease with sensitivity and grace.
'As a chronic, relapsing disease that takes and destroys lives, addiction lends itself to media representation that is dark and demoralizing,' said filmmaker Laura Naylor. 'While tragedies are all too often the outcome of this horrible disease, they are not the only stories to be told. This is a story of possibility.'
The Hollywood Reporter said this about the film: 'Making her solo debut after being one of three directors on the intriguing Mormon-singles docDuck Beach to Eternity, Laura Naylor tackles a more familiar subject inThe Fix, a moving look at addicts who help themselves by helping others. Centered on Junior Alcantara, a Bronx man who is frank about past failures without overdramatizing them, the well-made film will impress fest and small-screen audiences who aren't put off by topics (not just drugs, but Hepatitis C and family trauma) that sound drearier on the page than they are onscreen.'
The Fix was an Official Selection at several film festivals in 2014, including AFI Docs, the Maine International Film Festival, and the Heartland Film Festival, among others. It won the Jury Prize for Best Documentary at the Soho International Film Festival.
The Fix is available as a 72-minute documentary film or as a one-hour (1 x 52') television special.
