'Moving Green' in Transportation Means Moving Back to Rail Travel
While travel by rail is considered by many to be an antiquated and old fashioned way to get from point a to b, the United States is making efforts to increase commuter and freight rail use with its 'Moving Green' initiative. According to the National Train Day website, transportation generates about 1/3 of the greenhouse gases emitted in our country. Intercity rail travel uses about 20 percent less energy measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units) of energy per passenger mile than car or air travel. Ironically, one of the oldest forms of public transportation can the most effective in our progressive movement to become more energy efficient.
